More Than 50 Superstars Suing WWE Over Concussions
CNN – More than 50 former wrestlers filed a class action lawsuit against World Wrestling Entertainment on Monday. The complaint alleges that the former wrestlers suffer from long-term brain damage and the development of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE, the Alzheimer’s-like neurodegenerative disease associated with repeated hits to the head.
According to the suit “…the head trauma that has resulted in injury is the accumulated effect of many impacts to the Plaintiffs’ heads that occurred on a regular, routine basis during their WWE career.”
Yesterday I was pretty dismissive of this lawsuit, but this thing looks like it’s going to have some legs. What a shame. We live in a world where nobody takes responsibility for the choices they make in life, including entering a profession where it’s quite obvious you could have life long repercussions. A lot of these guys in the lawsuit spent the vast majority of their careers not working for WWE, which is completely laughable. It’s terrible that the American Court System has allowed lawsuits like this to continue to happen, and because of the high profile nature I’m sure we’ll end up seeing some sort of settlement or award. Like I said, does WWE need to step up their game when caring for their past and present Superstars? Absolutely. Should these guys be able to sue for injuries suffered in a high risk job? Absolutely not. I don’t know how people wake up in the morning and have this sort of sense of entitlement. What’s clear to me is this is an attempt by a fair amount of guys who squandered their pro wrestling money trying to make one more score off the wrestling business.
