Manager Explains Why Holly Holm Turned Down Cris Cyborg Fight At UFC 198
MMA Mania – Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, who coughed up her division strap to Miesha Tate in the UFC 196 co-main event, had a chance to get back inside the cage at UFC 198 on May 14 in Brazil.
Thanks, but no thanks.
“The Preacher’s Daughter” was not interested in fighting Invicta FC featherweight champion and Fight Valley co-star Cris Cyborg, who makes her long-awaited debut at the “Werdum vs. Miocic” pay-per-view (PPV) event inside Curitiba’s Arena da Baixada.
“We were not interested in that right now,” Manager Lenny Fresquez told Albuquerque Journal. “(Holm) just wants to fight Miesha.”
What Holly’s manager really wanted to say is: Cris Cyborg is big, scary and could punch a hole in Holly’s skull. We would never take that fight, and most of the guys on our team would never take that fight. Have you seen her biceps?
My guess is the statement I just wrote is probably the truth. I just don’t get Holly and her team being outraged when Dana White said Holly should have waited for Ronda so they can sell the biggest rematch on the planet. Holly said she was a warrior and would rather fight than wait. Now, since the opponent is the female version of Mike Tyson she is going to wait to fight Miesha or Ronda.
