UFC Fight Night 96 Lineker vs. Dodson

My Thoughts From The UFC Fight Night 96 Main Card

John Lineker def. John Dodson via split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47)

This was a great fight. John Lineker was the aggressor, kept moving forward, threw bigger shots and deserved to win in my eyes. Dodson was a counter puncher, tried to keep his distance (even though he kept running into the octagon), landed a few great head kicks and kept the fight fairly close in terms of punches landed. With all that said it appears Nick Diaz agrees with my assessment. Check out what he had to say during the fight:

Alex Oliveira def. Will Brooks via TKO (strikes) – Round 3, 3:30

It is a shame Will Brooks broke a rib during the first round because this was shaping up to be a great clinch war. Once the pain was too much for Brooks to handle Oliveira was able to secure the takedown and end the fight via strikes. On a side note – No fighter has the right to celebrate and taunt his opponent after a win if he missed weight. Alex should be embarrassed and I wouldn’t mind seeing these two run this again. I don’t think that will happen because Oliveira is heading up a weight class (boo!!!).

Zak Ottow def. Josh Burkman via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

I had this fight scored for Ottow (29-28), but it was a close decision. I think Ottow landed the harder shots with his kicks but Burkman landed some great stuff too (especially the takedown in the 3rd). I wouldn’t have argued the decision if it went the other way but two of the judges agreed with me so Zak is the winner.

Brandon Moreno def. Louis Smolka via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 1, 2:23

HUGE UPSET!!! Brandon Moreno looked like a beast in the Octagon. He was willing to trade with Smolka but ultimately fought for a takedown and when Smolka went to reverse the position he left his neck exposed and Brandon sunk in the guillotine. 5-1 odds don’t mean anything when the cage door closes!!! Now that I think about it, maybe 5-1 was their height. These flyweights are tiny.
