UFC Champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk Nominated For Polish Athlete of the Year Award
MMAJunkie – Fans can vote for Joanna Jedrzejczyk (11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at the official website for the award as the voting process enters its final hours.
Jedrzejczyk went 3-0 in 2015, winning the strawweight championship with a TKO of Carla Esparza at UFC 185. She followed up the title win with a pair of defenses against Jessica Penne and Valerie Letourneau.
She isn’t the only combat athlete up for the award. Boxers Andrzej Fonfara and Krzysztof Glowacki also picked up nominations. Fonfara went 2-0 with a stoppage win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and a unanimous decision over Nathan Cleverly; Glowacki was also 2-0, capping his year with a WBO title win over Marco Huck that some have called one of the best fights of the year.
The competition extends beyond the cage and ring, however. The biggest threat to Jedrzejczyk could be Agnieszka Radwanska, the tennis pro who won the WTA Finals title and ended the year ranked fifth in the world. She also won the WTA award for Fan Favorite for the fifth consecutive year, a testament to her ability to move fans to vote.
Voting ends Friday.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk was a beast in 2015 but I am not sure Poland is ready to hand the top athlete to a woman who practices MMA at the highest level. The problem is the sport is still new so the competition isn’t that deep yet. Don’t get me wrong, Joanna was as dominant as you can get in her weight class but the other problem I see is Polish people are known for being dumb. I know this has nothing to do with MMA but I figured it was a great transition into dumb Polak jokes (it’s okay because I am part Polish). Do you know why most Polish names end in ski? It is because they don’t know how to spell toboggan. How do you sink a Polish battleship? You put it in water. Did you hear about the Polish Kamikaze? He flew 48 successful missions. Why wasn’t Jesus born in Poland? Because they couldn’t find 3 wise men and a virgin. How do you get a one armed Polak out of a tree? Wave at him.
