UFC’s ‘Greatest Fighter Of All-time’ Poll Leaves Off Demetrious Johnson
Bloody Elbow – We’re just a couple of months away from the big UFC 200 pay-per-view, and to celebrate the historic event, the UFC is asking fans to help them determine the greatest fighters of all-time. Earlier this week, they put out a poll for fans to choose the #1 greatest fighter ever, with the first of a six-part countdown series beginning on May 29th. Here are the options that they’ve listed on their website:
Anderson Silva B.J. Penn Conor McGregor Matt Hughes Georges St-Pierre Ronda Rousey Jon Jones Jose Aldo Fabricio Werdum Chuck Liddell Other (you’d submit your own name afterwards)
Notice who’s missing? Current #2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Demetrious Johnson. UFC analyst Joe Rogan said as recently as last month that Mighty Mouse was not only the best fighter in the world today, but the best one of all-time. Joe Rogan says a lot of things, but Johnson is one of the most dominant champions in UFC history and was an elite bantamweight prior to the flyweight drop. I personally wouldn’t consider him (yet) as the greatest of all-time, but surely he should’ve been an option.
Lists like these always have a bit of controversy because somebody always gets excluded, ranked higher than they should have, etc. This is true because they are written and voted on by people who are not 100% objective. Even if you try and define criteria, you can’t take into account heart and determination. With that being said, Conor McGregor on the list and Demetrious Johnson off the list is a mistake of epic proportions. I don’t care if you include Conor for the publicity, but do not leave off Johnson. This man has been running through people his entire career. In the end, the UFC knows what they are doing because I just wrote an entire blog on the UFC’s Greatest of All Time list. Boo me!!!
