WWE Romance: Are Del Rio & Paige a Thing?
With close to 1,000 comments on WrestlingInc.com and countless Tweets, the love lives of WWE Superstars is a genre unto itself.
Zack Ryder and Emma, The Miz and Maryse and John Cena and Nikki Bella are known couples. Wrestling relationships are a major subplot of the hit show Total Divas, which premiered on E! in 2013 to 1.3 million viewers, and will inspire the Total Bellas spinoff.
With no offseason and endless travel together, it’s only common for WWE Superstars to begin dating one another. Some romances are brief, while others are cultivated into power couples whose entertainment value transcends dirtsheet headlines.
With the recent release of Beyonce’s Lemonade, an album presumed to be inspired by rumors or infidelity from husband Jay-Z, this pair of hip-hop royalty has cornered the market on retailing their personal lives for profit. Lemonade has garnered over 115.2 million streams while adding 1.2 million additional users to TIDAL.
But Bey and Jay are not the only entity that knows how to shrewdly market its love life. Some of WWE’s most high-profile storylines centered around real-life romances. Dating histories of WWE talent can be described as anything from scandalous to heartwarming.
Edge’s infamous 2005 fling with Lita, while the 2014 WWE Hall of Famer was still dating Matt Hardy, inadvertently launched Edge into superstardom. WWE initially tried to sweep the budding scandal under the rug by firing Hardy, but public outrage not only led to Hardy being brought back, but their feud was spawned off into an art-imitating life storyline.
After a series of matches that were just as physical as they were emotional, Hardy and Edge’s cage match at WWE Unforgiven in 2005 helped the pay-per-view amass 260,000 buys. Edge would go on to capture a whopping 11 world championships before ultimately retiring as a world champion in 2011. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame soonafter.

Is the romance of Alberto Del Rio and Paige real or a story for Total Divas, or both? Those are the big questions being asked all over the internet. Seriously though, good for Del Rio either way. Dude is around 40 and has bagged a smoking hot woman in her early 20s. The two were photographed making some magic of their own at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom last week. There’s one thing we know for sure too. This will end ugly, like almost every other wrestling romance and WWE will probably turn it into some sort of storyline. You would think Vince McMahon would implement some sort of “don’t hook up with your co-workers” policy with all the craziness that has happened with this particular subject. Instead of that, they did the opposite. They based a “reality” TV series around it. Del Rio is now my hero though, here’s hoping I can score a babe like Paige when I’m his age!
